Ex-libris International Competition on the topic

Purgatorio VIII o il Canto Lunigianese della Divina Commedia

(from the press release)

The CLSD (Centro Lunigianese Studi Danteschi/Lunigiana Centre of Dante Studies) with aid from AIE (Associazione Italiana Ex Libris/Italian Association of Ex libris) announces the Ex libris International Competition on the topic: Purgatorio VIII o il Canto Lunigianese della Divina Commedia (Purgatory VIII or the Lunigiana Canto in the Divine Comedy).

It is an event organized as part of the celebration for the 7th Centenary of Dante’s visit to Lunigiana (1306-2006), where the Italian Poet of Excellence made his crucial contribution to the Exemplary Peace Treaty signed in Castelnuovo Magra by the local political power on one side and the religious institutions of the place on the other.

The competition will be held as a support to the theme of Universal Peace as Dante treats it in “Monarchia”.

Indeed, according to the exegesis by CLSD, Dante’s philosophical treaty arises from the autobiographical scenery in the Canto at issue, where a Guelph and a Ghibelline – both very proud – are portrayed as friendly and glad sharers of the heavenly, bloomy garden in La Valletta dei Nobili (The lovely Valley of Noblemen).

More than four centuries before Immanuel Kant published his For Perpetual Peace, Dante had poetically portrayed in Purgatory VIII the philosophical process towards man’s liberation from the yoke of endless war under which mankind has been bent since prehistorical times.

Marco Manuguerra

2) Only works performed with the techniques of original graphic art (chalcography, xylography, lithography) will be admitted to the competition. Should works performed with different techniques from those above-mentioned be sent, they may be quoted in the catalogue as “Off-catalogue”, but won’t be assessed – the jury will pronounce unchallengeable opinion about it

Anyway, all those Ex libris produced before 2006 that keep to the topic of the competition can be accepted, although ineligible to compete; they can also be added to the Catalogue, even if they are dedicated to collectors or simply marked “ex libris” ( they might be used in purchase prizes)

5) The CLSD awards 3 prizes respectively of 1,000,00, 700,00 and 500,00 euro to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd grading. Purchase prizes will also be awarded to those works marked “ex libris”, but still unsigned. The buyer may ask the artist to sign the work

6) All works presented and admitted to the competition will be evaluated to be ranked, inserted in the Catalogue and shown in prestigious venues in Lunigiana in summer/autumn 2006 during the Celebration of the 7th Centenary of Dante’s visit on October 6th, 1306.
