Ex libris competition
Sint-Niklaas International Ex-libris Competition 2007
(from the invitation letter - in PDF format)
Dear Sir or Madam
Every two years the International Ex-libris Centre of the Town of
Sint-Niklaas organizes an International Ex-libris Competition in
association with the Ministry of Flanders.
For the 2007 edition, participants are being asked to make a
personalized ex-libris for a book-lover and collector,
or for the library of an existing institution or organization. The
chosen theme for 2007 is:
THE BEAUTY AND FORCES OF NATURE.
We are confident that this theme contains sufficient elements -
real, symbolic or abstract – to inspire an ex-libris that
reflects the book owner’s personality, profession or hobbies.
Entrants, who must be aged seventeen or over, are encouraged to explore the borders of small format graphic techniques old and new, and we look forward to receiving their ex-libris in relief printing, surface printing, intaglio printing or in one of the newer techniques which do not readily fit into the afore-mentioned categories. The quality and variety of the entries will determine whether the jury’s choice of exhibits for the exhibition is representative of the wide range of technical and artistic processes. We sincerely hope they will be.
This competition attracts a number of prizes. The Town of Sint-Niklaas is donating a total of four (for four different techniques). The Victor Stuyvaert Prize will be awarded to the best relief print by an artist under 30 years of age. The Graphia Prize, the Leo Winkeler Prize and the Prize awarded by the “Koninklijke Vriendenkring der Oud-Atheneumstudenten van Sint-Niklaas” will be chosen by the representatives of those organizations.
All participants are invited to attend the public announcement
of the results of the competition and the opening of the
23rd Small Graphics Biennial at the new gallery in the
Zwijgershoek Museum on Saturday April 21st 2007 (date/time
awaiting confirmation). Kindly check the arrangements on the Town
of Sint-Niklaas website
(www.sint-niklaas.be).
We advise participants to study carefully all the information,
the rules and conditions, as these do vary from one biennial to
another. On occasions the jury has had to disqualify interesting
entries because they do not adhere fully to one of the rules.
The International Ex-libris Centre of Sint-Niklaas wishes to emphasize
that this is an ex-libris competition and that consequently only
authentic ex-libris can be considered. The ex-libris submitted must
be made for a private, living individual or for the library of an
existing institution and with their express permission. The participant’s
signature on the entry form confirms that this is the case.
Entries must arrive at the following address before November
1st 2006:
International Ex-libris Centre (Municipal Museums), Internationale
tweejaarlijkse exlibriswedstrijd Sint-Niklaas Zwijgershoek 14, B-9100
Sint-Niklaas, Belgium.
If would-be participants have any queries, we would advise them to pay a visit to the International Ex-libris Centre (by appointment) or to carry out a search on the internet or to consult specialist literature.
We would like to thank everyone who accepts the challenge of employing his or her technical skills and imagination to project an image of the addressee in a meaningful, artistic and quality bookplate within the prescribed constraints of format and theme, and we wish them every success.
Yours faithfully,
By order of and on behalf of the Board of Burgomaster and Aldermen:
Marie-Louise Chalmet - Town Secretary
Annemie Wauman - Alderman
Freddy Willockx - Burgomaster
