Ex libris book showcase
Johann Rudolf Schellenberg
(1740-1806)
presentation by G.N.
With the subtitle "a pioneer of the modern ex libris in XVIII century", this is the free gift book for the members, published with the number 44 in 2004, care of the Swiss Ex Libris Club (SELC).
It is a book completely written in German, language I don't master; to understand something more, I perused my good, loved, up to date Garzanti dictionary and the Google online translation service.
SELC 2004 year book - Johann Rudolf Schellenberg
- front cover
It is the free book for, as said, Swiss Ex Libris Club members in 2004. For the first time since the beginning of the tradition of the year book gift, the Club changed the format and the guidelines that inspire the work. According to the president, Mr Josef Burch, who signs the introduction, the former format was too heavy a job for the SELC; so the Club choose to make an opportnity out of the change, while renovating the publication.
In Switzerland, the modern ex libris starts in particular with the works made by Johann Rudolf Schellenberg. It looked like a fitting idea, writes Burch, to start the new publication series of the Club with a book devoted to the one that started the modern Swiss ex libris tradition.
Josef Burch concludes his introduction with a thank to the author of the book, Ms Anna Stiefel, for her big job. She made an accurate biographic and iconographic research.
The book is in A4 size, consists of 46 pages in black and white; there are 62 images reproduced, in B/W as well. The book ends with a huge bibliography and the complete work list of JRS. Every ex libris has a detailed description: name of the owner, year of realization, iconographic description, size, bibliographic reference. It really is a worthy job. This book has been printed in 250 copies.
