Movable Type and Typography

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. The Tipoteca Italiana Fondazione and the “Museo del Carattere e della Tipografia” (Type and Printing Museum) based in Cornuda (Treviso) announces an International Ex Libris Competition entitled Movable Types and Typography. The winning ex libris will be used to mark the volumes kept in the Museum library.

2. Participation is open to artists from all countries and no more than 5 entries will be accepted from each one. The techniques to be used are xilography and chalcography (etching, graver, drypoint, etc.) and no sort of photo-mechanic reproduction will be admitted.

3. The engraved part of the ex libris must be no larger than 15 cm by 10 cm and no less than 9 cm by 6 cm. It must be easily distinguishable and the text ‘tipoteca italiana’ clearly legible in classical type. On the back of each ex libris must be the name and surname of the artist and indication of the techniques adopted in his/her work. The entry must be accompanied by brief biographical details as indicated below. The artist is free to include other personal material such as catalogues, monographs and articles on his/her work which will be kept in the archives of the Tipoteca Italiana.

4. Five copies of each ex libris entry must be sent by registered mail to be received no
later than 30 January 2006
at the following address:

5. The ex libris will become property of the Typeface and Printing Museum and the artists will not be entitled to claim payment of any type of compensation.

6. The ex libris submitted will be examined by a jury nominated by the Tipoteca Italiana composed of well known personalities from the world of art and culture.

7. The jury will declare winners for the following prizes each worth Euro 2,500 (two thousand five hundred)
– Xylographic Ex Libris Prize - Italy
– Chalcographic Ex Libris Prize - Italy
– Xylographic Ex Libris Prize - Europe
– Chalcographic Ex Libris Prize - Europe
– Xylographic Ex Libris Prize - Non European Countries
– Chalcographic Ex Libris Prize - Non European Countries

8. The prize winners will be informed by registered letter with detailed indications of the date and venue of the Prize giving ceremony.

9. The jury will also select the best runners-up who will receive a diploma of merit. The ex libris will be exhibited in a show organized during the Prize giving ceremony and they will be accompanied by a short biography of the artist published in the catalogue. All other participants will be listed by name and nationality in the final part of this catalogue.

10. The winners shall transfer the original matrices for the winning ex libris to the Tipoteca Italiana as well as 50 numbered and autographed copies for each work submitted to the competition. If this is not possible, they will be requested to provide 25 assorted ex libris made for others which will become part of the ex libris archive at the Tipoteca Italiana.

11. Local accommodation for the winning artists and nominated runners-up who will
participate at the inaugural exhibition will be provided by the organizers.

12. By participating in this competition the artists accept without conditions these
rules and regulations and abide by the decisions of the jury.
