RULES OF THE INTERNATIONAL EXLIBRIS COMPETITION SINT-NIKLAAS 2005
Art. 1
The International Ex Libris Centre of the City of Sint-Niklaas is organising a biennial competition among
graphic artists of all countries to produce a bookplate with a predefined theme. The aim of the competition is to
arouse public interest in authentic bookplates, this high quality printed label glued into books to mark the
ownership of the person for whom the bookplate is made. At the same time it is meant to draw the young graphic
artists' attention to the possibilities and artistic qualities of this component of graphic art.
The International Exlibris Competition is organized in conjunction with the Ministry of the Flemish Community.
Art. 2
For the 2005 competition, we are asking you to send a personalised ex-libris bearing the owner's name.
No theme has been laid down. Special attention needs to be paid to the integration of the text part in the image.
Art. 3
An authentic bookplate must satisfy the following conditions:
b) a bookplate text must be integrated into the illustration :
- the words 'ex libris' or a similar formula denoting book-ownership, such as for example "from the library of..."
or "this book is the property of..."
- the name of the book's owner, i.e. the name of a living person, or of the library of an existing organisation
(see registration form)
b) in order to guarantee the authenticity of the bookplate, and to protect privacy, bookplates may only be
submitted subject to the express permission of the person for whom they were made being given to the artist.
The same applies for libraries of organisations. (See registration form);
c) if the text contains non-Latin characters the artist should write a translation in English, in pencil,
on the reverse side.
d) a bookplate is a small graphic, and the format of the bookplate must be adapted to the different formats which
books can have. For this reason the maximum height and width of the illustration on the print block or the plate
edge on the print plate is: 13cm;
the support, i.e. the paper upon which the bookplate is printed should be maximum 20 x 15 cm. Bookplates submitted
must not be framed, nor mounted, nor fixed to another piece of paper, cardboard or any other material. In selecting
the printing paper and the techniques to be used, the artist should bear in mind the purpose of a bookplate. The
bookplates submitted should be delivered ready for use in the intended manner. They should be able to be glued,
as they are, without the need for cutting, framing or any other intervention.
Art. 4
Any graphic techniques capable of producing a run of at least 5 identical, good quality prints, are
acceptable. Entrants' attention is drawn to the fact that only printed bookplates will be considered. Drawings,
studies and/or designs and photocopies are not acceptable. Original photographic and digital creations are
admitted.
Art. 5
a) Artists born before 1987, from any country, may enter a maximum of 3 different, recent bookplates,
made in 2003 or 2004. Three identical, printed copies of each bookplate are to be submitted.
b) A completed registration form must accompany the entry. The obligatory registration form must show the
following:
- artists' surname and first name, artists' full address, a short curriculum vitae or complement to it showing
the date of birth,
- the name of the bookplate owner with information about and a declaration of his agreement to the exhibition
and reproduction of the bookplate in his name,
- the technique used, described in detail and the year the bookplate was made, (to simplify catalogue
production),
- an explanation of the theme in Dutch, French, German or English.
c) Three prints of each submitted exlibris must be forwarded to:

together with the registration form

payment or any type of compensation for the submitted exlibris.
By submitting the bookplate for participation in the competition, the artist and the titular give their
permission to reproduce the bookplate in catalogues, non-commercial printed material and specialist publications,
and for it to be included in exhibitions, with mention of the name, and forgoing any claim to compensation for
this.
