Dear sir/madam
The International Exlibris Centre of the City of Sint-Niklaas in co-operation with the ministry of the Flemish
Community has organised the two-yearly international Exlibris (bookplate) Competition. For the 2005 competition,
we are asking you to send a personalised exlibris bearing the owner's name with special attention for the integration
of the text part in the image. This time no theme has been laid down.
We hope to receive exlibris in which the text part and the illustration blend harmoniously or support each
other. Small illustrations which tell a lot about the holder, the owner of the book, his/her personality,
his/her hobbies and preferences, his/her library of favourite books ... the essence of which has been fittingly
represented within the limits of the exlibris. We also want to encourage artists to explore the boundaries of
the different old and new miniature graphic techniques and look forward to their exlibris in relief print,
engraved print, planography or in one of the newer difficult-to-classify techniques. The quality and variation
of the entries will determine whether the jury will be able to show the wide range of technical and artistic
possibilities in the selection for the exhibition. We're counting on it.
Several prizes are linked to this competition. The City of Sint-Niklaas is donating four prizes (for four
different techniques). The Victor Stuyvaert Prize will be awarded to the best wood engraving by an artist under
30 years of age. The Graphia Prize will be chosen by the bookplate society Graphia, and the Prize donated by
the Friends and Former Students of Sint-Niklaas Atheneum will go to an artist under the age of 25. The minimum
entry age has been raised to 17.
All participants are invited to attend the announcement of the competition results and the opening of the 22nd
Small Graphics Biennial on March 19, 2005. The exact timing will be announced on the City of Sint-Niklaas
website, www.sint-niklaas.be.
Experience from earlier competitions has shown that interesting pieces sometimes had to be excluded by the
jury, because they did not meet the regulations. The International Exlibris Centre of Sint-Niklaas would like
to emphasise that this is a bookplate competition, and that therefore only authentic bookplates can be
submitted for selection. It is therefore recommended that entrants read the regulations thoroughly before
submitting bookplates.
Entries should arrive by 1st December 2004, at the following address:
Internationaal Exlibriscentrum (Stedelijke Musea)
e-mail: lu.boeykens@sint-niklaas.be
Zwijgershoek 14
B-9100 Sint-Niklaas

We would like to thank those wishing to participate for their contribution to the promotion and wider
recognition of these highly cultural treasures and wish them all the best of luck.
Faithfully,
On behalf of the board of burgomaster and aldermen:
