From the foreword of the book (text by Giovanni Rimondini):
"It is said that the tarots, or 'cards of triumphs', as Lords and Ladies called them, were born in the courts of Milan, Bologna and Ferrara, toward the middle of the XV century. To the birth certainly contributed the Malatestan courts of Rimini-Fano-Senigallia, Cesena-Sarsina and Pesaro-Fossombrone, whose lords, in that time, Sigismondo Pandolfo, Malatesta Novello and Galeazzo dei Malatesti were cousins of the Visconti-Sforza, of the Este and of the Bentivoglio ..."

Umberto Giovannini, Morciano di Romagna, 1969, made more than 500 xilographies; he is a well known artist in the ex libris world.
