1 - Invitation to the First International ex libris competition - Ankara 2003, by Prof Hasip Pektas

Dear Artist / Designer / Collector,
Hacettepe University and Ankara Exlibris Society are organizing an international exlibris competition open to artists and designers from all countries, with the purpose of bringing together authentic ex libris prints of the highest aesthetic, artistic and technical quality, evaluating these works, encouraging the artists, and introducing the art of ex libris to the general public.
An extensive selection of the best works submitted will be main creations for the first Exlibris Museum which is being planned to be established in Turkey.
These exlibrises will be exhibited in Ankara, Istanbul and Sint-Niklaas (Belgium)

We are looking forward your participation and for announcement and support to our competition, whose deadline is 20th April 2003.

2 - Rules of the First International ex libris competition - Ankara 2003.

Art.1 - There are no limitations as to the theme chosen for the ex libris.

Art. 2 - There are no restrictions regarding printmaking techniques or the number of different ex libris submitted. The ex libris must be prints; original drawings or sketches are not accepted, nor are copies made by electrostatic process such as photocopy.

Art. 3 - The works must be conceived as ex libris, i. e. as small-format art graphics made to be pasted into books and to identify their owner. They should include, integrated with the image, the words "ex libris..." or an equivalent (for example, "from the library of...", "this book belongs to...", etc.), together with the name of a living person or of a library of a currently existing institution by whom or by which it was commissioned, or to whom or to which the ex libris is dedicated.

Art. 4 - Three prints of each ex libris should be submitted. Each print should be signed or initialled by the artist and should bear legibly on the back the artist's name, address, date of birth, the technique used and the year of creation (see example below). If the artist has not used Latin alphabet in the printed inscription, he is requested to write a translation into English on the back of the print. Also, if for reasons of design he/she has exceptionally chosen to integrate into the image only the owner's initials, the artist is requested to write the owner's full name on the back of the print.

Art. 5 - The printed surface of the ex libris should not exceed 130 mm x 130 mm, nor should the support (paper) be larger than 210 mm x 210 mm.

Art. 6 - The deadline for submission is 20 April 2003, the stamped postal date being decisive.

Art. 9 - Prizes:
First Prize: 1400 USD
Second Prize: 1200 USD
Third Prize: 1000 USD
Jury Special Prize: 1000 USD
The Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Culture Special Prize: 1000 USD
Hacettepe University Special Prize: 1000 USD
Individuals and Institutions will probably offer special prizes, which should total at least 1000 USD (= ± 1.000 Euro).
The Jury will be competent also to attribute Honourable Mentions to ex libris deserving honorary awards.

Art. 10 - The ex libris received will be evaluated on the basis of their authenticity and originality, their artistic, technical and aesthetic merit, and the quality of the relation between image and inscription in the composition. A prize may not be granted if the Jury considers that work of insufficient quality has been submitted.

Art. 11 - An extensive selection of the best works submitted will be exhibited in Ankara during October 2003, and in Istanbul during December 2003. Exhibitions may be shown also in other major cities of Turkey and abroad, if suitable venues are found.

Art. 12 - A catalogue will be prepared containing prizewinning and exhibited ex libris;
a copy of the catalogue will be sent to each participant included in the catalogue. A contribution to postage fees may be requested from non-Turkish participants.

Art. 13 - The safety of submissions during posting and delivery should be ensured, for example by registered post. Submissions will not be returned.

Art. 14 - Participants must fill in the form below and post it together with the works submitted.

Art. 15 - By participating in the competition, an artist is considered to have accepted its terms and conditions, and agrees to abide by the decisions of the jury.
